So now, after shutting down LPIA, they are going to agree to the security checkpoint until the Government will now do a "Security Risk Assessment". Would not all of this been done before we implemented the standards set internationally? Unions win again and we will be back to status quo where anything goes in the 242. Government is spineless and will suck up to these irresponsible unions to garner votes in order to protect their position of power. Wait until the FAA comes down on us.
Does Mr. Rolle know that the majority of high risk cash transactions originate from our recently legalized numbers business? These people have no choice but to launder money because with the exception of BOB they have no place to place it. Hence the buying up of real estate, to wash their money, with the governments help by renting their properties. Now they will tighten up on legitimate businesses and individuals with cash transactions, and try and B/S the international financial community that we are fighting laundering. Now we will know what the Bible means with the prophecy "The Innocent Shall Suffer For The Guilty".
Don't call on the union to do anything. They have already exhibited their intentions, have broken the law, and caused irreparable damage to our international aviation reputation. Send them home and they will not have to worry about a security checkpoint that is standard throughout the world. In some countries they would be facing criminal charges. These people are not irreplaceable and it is time for government to stop being a ping pong ball for the unions.
Thisisours, are you saying that the union acted responsibly in shutting down the airport? Ridiculous. If you or I refused to go through the security checkpoint (in which they open bags and make you remove items out of you pockets), we would be denied access to the flights and more than likely questioned by airport police. There is a vast difference between a "reasonable stance by the union" and shutting down our main source of visitor air arrivals. The inconvenience caused to our visitors and the international airlines, will result in negative press about our country, and hit many of us in the pocketbook. They forced some incoming aircraft to have to turn back and find alternative landing spots. Thank God their were no air accidents because of their rash decisions, or these actions might have resulted in them sitting where they truly belong, in a cell.
So avidreader, the air traffic controllers in the Bahamas do not need to adhere to international standards relative to security check points for them. They can disobey regulations enforced by our government at the insistence of the International Civil Aviation Authority, at the expense of numerous flight delays and cancellations, resulting in a black mark against our country's ability to enforce international aviation standards. They feel as if their privacy is being violated, and therefore chose to stop air travel in and out of LPIA. They are screwing around with the lifeblood of our country, and have taken a ridiculous stance against regulations that are routine. They frisk me and other passengers when I go through security, but I accept this as a part of making air travel safer for everyone. No sympathy from me. Minister Hanna and PM Christie give them their walking papers, hire foreigners if necessary, until you can replace them with properly trained replacements, but for God's sake do not let them think that they shut down our gateway and suffer no consequence.
I land boy, you are spot on. I know of two local companies that have the equipment and have trained instructors who could have performed this very same show. Another example of the Christie administrations "Put Bahamians First" B/S slogan.
Despite your collective dislike for Mr. Miller he is correct in one thing, the situation has gotten worse since BPL took over the reigns at BEC. They are now lamenting the fact that the equipment is old, uses expensive fuel, can't get a rate increase, blah, blah, blah. They did not get this deal overnight, and any successful billion dollar business would have performed due diligence, prior to signing an agreement of this magnitude. This brings to question their expertise, and capability, in running and improving that in which they fought so hard to be contracted for. It also says a lot about the governments selection of this company.
Is Obie already shutting the country down? The only person who had the backbone to stand up to these individuals, was Sir Lynden, when he fired the entire lot of those that walked off the job at Freeport airport. Come on Mr. PM, this is the lifeblood of our country, show some spine.
Mr. Minister of Education, who could not get the schools repaired on time, for the new year and who revels in the d- average. You have enough time to utter that the freedom of information act may be tabled next month. You have time for this but not your own bailiwick. This act would mean you will have to give us the scoop on the Rubis oil spill in your constituency, the nolle when you were acting attorney general (God knows how), from where you obtained the famous emails tabled in parliament, your involvement with a convicted felon who is one of your generals. You better hope this legislation never reaches parliament.
I think the legislation they are proposing, that will criminally charge employers who don't get government approval prior to staff cut backs or redundancies, needs to be amended to imprison union leaders, who threaten the Government with a "country wide shut down" if their demands are not met. Who sounds more like a criminal, Obie, or the company struggling to stay in business?
