Mr. Lightbourn hung himself out on a limb with his insensitive and barbaric comments. He claims his comments were taken out of context and that what he said is not what he meant. That may or may not be the case, but one must always be prepared to suffer the consequences of one's actions. The FNM party has disassociated itself from his comments, and the leadership should take action to ensure he never has an opportunity to speak on their behalf again.
Good place for him to run. He will be facing the candidate who already literally "cut his hip" in the House of Assembly, who will be more than ready to deliver another beating on him. Who knows how the Long Island people feel about Loretta anymore? Only time will tell. But Rollins can rest assured that they won't put up with his kind of b/s and will run him like a sheep. Good riddance.
Just last week this minister was boldly comparing the amount of schools the PLP has built compared to those built by the FNM. Every year his government has some excuse about school repairs being late, or schools not not opening on schedule. Even when these repairs are done, the schools are still shabby, their are insufficient teachers, and we still have the D average. Can any of you remember that before the PLP their were government schools too, such as Eastern Junior, and Eastern Senior, and many great Bahamians were educated at these institutions. I daresay that their grade average was higher than that occurring today. This was under the dreaded UBP. The Ministry of education system has certainly not improved the quality of students coming out of that system, since the PLP took command.
If we build 1,000 schools and the D- average still exists, then no one has accomplished anything. The problem is within the Ministry of Education, and in the system itself. Do not pat yourselves on the back based on the number of buildings (many of which are unsanitary, in disrepair, and under staffed with qualified teachers} you have constructed. You all need to go back to school.
Dr. Minnis did not ask to be leader of the FNM, but rather was thrust into this position when the great PAPA abandoned ship after a crushing defeat at the polls. By his own admission he said the FNM lost the election because the people were "angry" at him. The party was left in shambles and in debt after his departure. There is no question now that the people made the wrong choice by electing the PLP. Dr. Minnis spent the first two years trying to re-engergize the party and repair its damaged reputation and financial position. He was challenged as leader in 2014, and was returned by a large majority. For the next two years he has continued to keep the party together and gear up for a battle to win the government. All the while doing this, he was being blindsided and back stabbed by the very people who should have been supporting him, and in their power hungry state , even threatened a vote of no confidence in him should he not call an early convention. This was unheard of in the history of the party, but nevertheless, he convened the requested convention, defeated his challengers, and emerged again as party leader. How many times does the man have to win to satisfy some people. Wake up and realize that the majority of the fnm want doc as their leader. Watch and see what the super 6 turncoats do now.
It appears that their are a lot of FNMs who really are not FNMs but only support the party if their favourite is the leader. The leader is the leader for all of the FNM party and all who are TRUE supporters should rally behind him. No person who ran for elected office has been kicked out or asked to leave the party for exercising their democratic right to run for office, which speaks to the character of Dr. Minnis and his team. If people wish to desert the party because they don't like a particular leader, it is likewise their democratic right to join the PLP (whom you have all been saying is the worst government in history), or the DNA (who have a snowballs chance in hell of winning), or not voting at all. All of these actions will help to give the PLP another term in government, but if that is what "so called FNMs" really want, so be it.In the meanwhile, I say, congratulations to Dr. Minnis and encourage himon his path to re-unite the party and work toward winning the next election.
Of course Dr. Minnis is trying to win the leadership. Is she not trying to do the same? The difference between the two is she is all over social media whining and bitching about his efforts. Dr. Minnis on the other hand, presented a position of the FNM party uniting to defeat the PLP. Is that not supposed to be the goal of the party? I must admit, him calling her up to the stage was a stroke of genius. Don't short sell this man on his intelligence because he is not a polished speaker. Mr. Ingraham had difficulties in this area as well, but proved to be a dynamic (allbeit a dictatorial) leader. She will have her chance at the podium, and the delegates all will have a chance to decide who the leader will be. Time for her to grow up.
Why would the former PM and the former DPM (who is fortunate that his name did not come up in the BEC scandal), suddenly find their voices and decide to offer opinions on the state of the FNM. They are very wealthy as a result of their former political positions, and it is in their best interests and the best interest of the FNM and the Bahamas in general, that they keep quiet, and ride off into the sunset with whatever dignity they have left. How can anyone forget Ingraham the deserter and seriously place any value on anything he says.
Dr. Allen, you have the sympathy of all of us, especially those who have had the barrel of a gun pointed at them, and were in fear for their lives. Thank God that you and your family were unharmed. Do not let this unfortunate incident deter you in all of the wonderful work you do for our country.
It appears that FNM supporters are say that the party will die if Dr. Minnis is re-elected leader over Loretta Butler-Turner. Are you true party supporters or only so if the one you like is leader. Are you really saying that the current PM and his administration are a better alternative than an FNM led by Dr. Minnis? No matter who wins the leadership race, if you are true supporters you will rally behind that leader. The job to unseat the PLP has been made difficult by this infighting and the public washing of your underwear in the press. Each candidate has the right to run for leadership, and should do so based on their own merits, not upon the opinions of people who by their comments seem to be hell bent on destroying the opposition FNM. If we do not stop this public display of character assassination the PLP will be handed the next election on a platter. Note that Dr. Minnis has taken the high road in all of this, and has avoided casting aspersions on his opponents but rather is conducting a civil campaign to retain leadership(which will more than likely be the case).
