Extremely disappointing and horrific incident. If what is stated is true, consequences should follow for these policemen but let's be real, I doubt anything will happen. What do we expect when there are no rules for any of us ??! Laws don't apply to our people and that's why we're in the mess we are in today. You have something like this happen and then two days later Greenslade in the press pleading for the public's help in identifying the REAL criminals. The public don't want help you if this the treatment they are getting! The police need to be properly educated just like the rest of us- just how they talk to people any kind of way , this incident does not surprise me. Very sad, I hope justice is served.
If Bahamians would put half this sort of effort into bettering themselves and just being decent human beings, we would be so ahead as a country. What were they thinking doing this ?
Instead, many people, both young and old , live their lives on this ridiculous entitlement fantasy , lying, tiefin and trying to keep up with the jonses. Bahamians have so much potential as a people and we live in a beautiful country, but we are throwing it all away for materialism, greed and no good ways.
He is absolutely ridiculous- I couldn't believe the news when I heard him talking this morning.how embarrassing - i was too shame for him and for our country.
But you'll always have people like our friend Kevin Evans who's letter to the Tribune says we should not "gloat" over Lightbourne's loss. This has nothing to do with gloating and it is sad that so many people are completely brainwashed by this foolishness that the PM is spewing. The people supporting/agreeing with the PM are showing their ignorance and it just proves that we are not teaching our kids to think critically and outside the box. We need to look beyond party colors and what favors we can get for free- start realizing that what he has done is not helping the country or our people in the long run. All we are telling people is that it is okay to not pay what we owe because we will get bailed out eventually, it's all about who you know.
Dear Mr. Evans, I do hope you have the opportunity to read Honestman's valid points as well as mine and the well-written posts by others on this article.
Just because someone is criticizing the PM and Mr. Lightbourne does not mean they are "gloating" at the loss of his home. This man is well-trained in business and finance; his home was severely and purposely undervalued ; he's been involved in various scandals/scams; and now the chickens are coming home to roost. It really is a simple thing- nothing to do with gloating. It is completely unfair that this man should be allowed to evade taxes for all this time and for the PM to intervene the way he has is beyond abuse of power. And the icing on the cake is to knowingly appoint this man as a spokesperson for the collection of a brand new tax that the average Bahamian cannot afford. Do you not see reason for upset?
As you quite rightly noted, thousands of Bahamians are unable to pay their mortgages for one reason or another. Do you not think they may have family members suffering with illness , too? We wouldn't know about it because they may not be big shots like Mr. Lightbourne, but they are fellow Bahamians as well- who is to say they should not also be helped??! I am sorry to hear of his wife's illness but that has nothing to do with him and his family evading taxes deliberately for all these years.
The message being sent by the PM and Lightbourne is clear: Certain people are more important than others, i.e. people with power, people who support my party and are one of my cronies. If he truly wanted to be a hero, Mr. Christie should have lent or given personal funds towards the mortgage, not simply attempt to erase the situation just because he can.
In regards to the topic of this article, a silent protest should be done, and I also agree with the organizations going through with it.
@sheeprunner, this protest is for you. You are a perfect example of what the purpose of the demonstration is. Unless I am misunderstanding your statement (and please correct me if I am ), you are saying that they need not go ahead with this protest because Leslie Miller was only joking and therefore his actions were not criminal. He may have never touched a woman in his life, but the fact remains that his comment was severely inappropriate especially coming from an MP. If we don't correct the people who represent the country, how can we correct and reprimand every Tom, Dick and Harry on the street? a message must be sent that this sort of behavior is NOT accepted and that appropriate action to correct WILL be taken as a result. I don't see how that's hard to understand or "making a mountain out of a mole hill". The truth is, it is not a mole hill, because it's affecting our children, women, both young and old and even young men who are also victims of domestic violence. If we don't correct these comments, whether in jest or seriousness, we miss another opportunity to educate the public and especially our youth on what is right and wrong.
They don't care about the policies and practices until it hits them home. Think about it, do bahamians really care about the crime levels? Because we have been taught to stay dumb and not think critically (because our education system has never been improved by either government party), we have never learnt to think outside of the box. The "not my good child" mentality will always prevail. Once I am not being directly hurt, I don't mind the crime. But as soon as my friend or relative is strung up in a crime, or shot or injured, then I care about crime. A lot of our people are not serious man, they are only thinking about the here and now. And by that I mean, who threw the best party before election and who gave out the most ham and turkey.
@ Honestman, This should have been a public relations disaster for the Miller/PLP but I highly doubt this is something that will be remembered. Yes there was outcry from some concerned parties (I myself was absolutely disgusted and disturbed), but so many of us think this IS a laughable matter- so it shouldn't damage their credibility that much.
Sad but true. Who are we as a people? Excellent question. The fact that not a one person corrected him or called him out in the house speaks to exactly the kinds of people we are. The fact that those individuals laughed along with him shows how seriously we take domestic violence. All that incident has done is confirm in the minds of young men, women and children that this sort of behavior is OK and accepted.
I have no respect for Perry Christie at the best of times, but let's be real, this is no time for ridiculous religious threats.
How bout we "stop playing with God" when we are lying, tiefin', sweetheartin (inside the church at that), and taking from the poor to make our pockets fat and drive fancy cars. It is always interesting to hear how very vocal the church is when it comes to these kinds of matters, yet when it comes to the general sad state of our youth, and various other scandals in the church/society, not a word is said.
"crime pays" is already engraved in the minds of our people, whether lyall bethel knows it or not. Legalizing gambling , something which thousands of people do every day *anyhow*, is not going to suddenly change us from a wonderful, law-abiding country to a demonized society. Church goers visit the number houses no matter what !
how bout his future plans in sandilands. this man is living in the past - an ignorant male chauvinist and an embarrassment to humankind. Thank god he has no real position in government. Boy, bran knows how to pick em.
