Since when do you fire an employee and give him severance pay??? If an employee is terminated why do other emloyees feel compelled to go out and protest? It should be between the terminated employee, management and union if necessary. If fired he is to go and apply for unemployment benefits and look for another job. An employer has the right to terminate an employee as long as there is just cause. The employee also has the right to file grievience against the employer. There are also rules to follow in justifying the termination. Usually there are warnings given in advance. If the same problems exist continuously the employee can and should be fired. Most of the time an employee knows why he is being terminated. Could be for tardiness, calling in sick too often, not performing duties, too many errors, etc. An employee on probation can be fired at any time without any explanation.
Having lived in Nassau 3 years I found that electricity and water is far too expensive. Three times higher than the US. I cannot see how the Bahamian working class can pay their bill when their salaries are so low let alone the pensioners who receive even less. It is such a shame and then if you get behind a month they come and cut you off without warning. I understand if you are on a payment plan you still have to "catchup" and pay your current bill when due. If you can't afford to pay your regular bill how on earth can you also pay the amount BEC request that is in arrears each month??
the court system has a lot to do with the crime going on in nassau. most of those alleged criminals out in the street on bail and those with electronic bracelets need to be in jail. they know their chances of being found guilty are slim and will continue to do criminal acts. in the us electronic monitoring is much more controlled. at the same time all crime cannot be eradicated no matter where you live but the bahamas is so far off base with their laws. government looks the other way at what is negative and has done nothing to change. perfect example...selling counterfeit goods and allowing the web shops to operate. i know the police know who most of these criminals are but why aren't they being arrested? what about the drug lords and the gang lords? you can't tell me the police don't know how to find them and get them off the street. the island isn't that large it's not like looking for a needle in a haystack.
I too noticed the "marital arts training"......where are some of these people educated?? Is it what Roach said or is it the reporters mistake?? Whatever happened to proofreading??? I have noticed a LOT of errors in spelling and pronounciation of words in the press.
I agree with most of what Mr. Mitchell is saying. I believe Immigration Officers should be respected as long as they carry out their duties that is in a professional manner becoming to an officer. I also believe that if immigraton has the need for an immigration inquiry at a job site officers should report to the HR department and request to have security or an HR person escort the employee to the HR office for questioning so as not to embarrass anyone. The incident at Atlantis would have been avoided had this technicque been used. It would not have caused embarrassment to the employee or tourist and others in the area. By the way I am a former US Immigration employee (37 yrs) and it was always stressed upon us to be the best that we possibly can and to uphold the law at all times whether in uniform or not. I wish you well.
