The Law of Unintended Consequences will most probably dictate an exit from the rental market of some landlords and a reluctance of investors considering an investment in the rental market; consequently the number of available rental units will decline while rents will increase. Sadly the electorate are not savvy enough to perceive this result and will instead applaud and support the rather blantant example pf pandering to secure votes in the upcoming election.
Many of us have noted the way so many police persons drive and so will have formed an opinion already as to whether or not the police vehicle was being driven in a safe and sensible manner. How much is the life of this young woman, lost so tragically, worth in monetary terms? 25 million dollars, or more? Add the salaries she would have earned over the next 30 years, add the value of the unpaid work looking after family members, cooking, cleaning, etc., add in the value of the unborn children that she will never bear. Such a tragedy, and so avoidable.
I offer my congratulations to , Brigette Dupuch-Knudsen on both her achievement and her choice of altruistic career. The Dupuch family have a long and distinguished historical record of service to the Bahamas ; she continues this tradition. Thank you.
It is reported that in a country less than 50 miles from ours there are 350 million firearms, unregistered and owned by private citizens. Some 5 million or so of those private citizens visit the Bahamas each and every year. Many of them arrive on private vessels. There are many ways by which firearms enter this country. It is unstoppable. Sadly the killings will continue.
For someone who signs his letters as Common Sense, the writer seems rather bereft of that quality. What diaspora is being referred to here? In common modern usage the word refers to people of African heritage who no longer live on the African continent. If this is what the writer is referring to, then good luck with that. Why would anyone want to move to country with one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world and an approaching dysfunctional justice system? If you are wealthy enough to buy an island or live in a protected gated community, then OK, possibly. And just exactly what is this Lucayan culture? Sitting on low carved stools perhaps?
Ride Share apps are brilliant. Most every democratic country has them. Whenever I travel to a developed country they are my first choice. The rides are safer, quicker, and more friendly. The feedback that the riders give after each interaction with a driver means that the rude, dirty, of dangerous drivers can be easily identified and avoided. The Bahamian public and visitors both would benefit greatly if or when introduced. Perhaps the FNM could add it to their new political manifesto, it should gain them a whole lot of undecided voters' support.
