This time the PM is correct. These crazy environmentalists need to focus their attention on the delivery room at PMH. As long as more and more babies are popping out, more and more jobs are needed, more and more real estate needs to be cut down for houses, more cars, more roads, more garbage disposal, etc, etc. If you want to save the environment stop polluting it with people !!!!!
They should take their signs to Shirley Street where they can be more effective at "saving the world".

If the Minister were serious about proving the goodness of our detention centers - he would give permission to the same opposition minister who visited a couple weeks ago to RETURN and this time bring the media with cameras any time day or night completely unannounced (no reservations or forewarning) - any time during the next 4 months.

I'm sure those running the center could not keep up a pretense of good behaviour for that long - not know at what moment the truth could suddenly be revealed.

Well boo hoo hoo. What a sad story. While i understand very clearly the usual unwelcome effect of increased taxes on a recovering economy, in this case the shoe fits quite well.

Banks have been expanding and opening new branches left, right, and center the past five years - and adding on square feet to existing structures. Meanwhile consumers (you know those so-called citizens of this country) continue to struggle to maintain their same old roof.

A little bit out of their profits to aid the government coffers is (in this case) not a bad thing at all.

I was going to comment on this story (like i do on many) - but I can't say it any better than you have (and Jackflash as well).

We've got to stop making churches & babies and start making high school graduates instead.

When an opposition MP visited the Detention Centre the other day, news reporters with cameras (or without cameras) were not allowed in.

Uhm..

Excellent thinking Mr. Malcolm. However, that would require the Government giving up majority rule (in their minds) - and they would rather have citizens standing in soup lines on the streets than to do that.

The economy will eventually solve the problem, and the Government will give in and agree to abide by the Agreement. However, I believe much more starvation and murder will occur over the next year or two before they come to that realization.

You cannot sue the Government because the Attorney General has the Constitutional authority to "bring, dismiss, decide, etc" (not exact quote) ANY case before the Courts.

You can bring the case - and he can just dismiss it. Simple.

The only thing that comes to mind is a general "sick out". But of course that would require Bahamians to work together as brothers and sisters with a common cause - and that is very unlikely. Has not happened since Burma Road.

If the Port could meet with the management of all the important business (such as airlines, taxi persons and companies, gas stations, hotels/motels, tourist activity companies, travel agents, and yes even banks) and get them "on board" for an island-wide "sick out" every Friday that would devastate the whole island and cause lack of revenue to the Government - that might get their attention.

People would argue that it would cause a loss of business. Hello? What do you think the new policies are going to do? Face the music, or run like a coward. It's the people's choice.

When tourists can't get from the airport, or if they get to their hotels can't get checked in, or get clean sheets, etc - and when management chooses not to reprimand employees who are "sick" - every Friday - then the problem will get the attention it deserves.

Otherwise, we will all just sit around waiting for Mr. Smith to get a court date, and drown financially before it gets on the calendar.

Sorry, some of your points may be valid - but I think she simply means that we did not fight with England for freedom. Yes, Mr. Pindling misbehaved in the House, and I'm sure there were some other actions but ...

there was no battle. Hundreds (nor even dozens) of Bahamians did NOT lose their lives while fighting with British naval officers (etc) for our independence. Nobody can claim that their grandfather was killed by a landmine or by canon fire from a British naval vessel or from any other military style intervention.

A Constitution was simply approved by Britain and we were sent on our merry way. How is it that a country who "wins" independence has its Constitution being an actual Order of another country - and why is it that to this day the so-called "General Orders" which govern our Public Service have strewn throughout it the word "colonies" ?

I won't even mention the Privy Council (oops I just did).

We are not independent. People are not stupid - they know we are not - they just come out for the free food and say what people expect them to say so they get it.

We don't even print our own money - it is printed in Canada.

It's not something "good and nice" for the Bahamas. The article says they borrowed 58 million dollars from China and are going to give it back to China by way of a Chinese construction company.

This has put YOUR grandchildren in enormous debt.

We just "celebrated" 40 years of "Independence" and yet we can't put our hands on 58 million dollars in our Treasury? What nonsense ! So that makes us independent - or does it make us beggars, begging another country to please lend us some money and help us to fix our lousy "independent" roads.

On top of that, the few measly coins that our people are supposed to get paid out of the deal (you know, our unworthy Bahamian workers) - are delayed and delayed. They can wait. Who cares about them? They're just citizens. That's the attitude that we get back.

We are at war with China (and we're losing).

Too many baby factories in the Bahamas for us to be successful at anything else. Nobody cares where their kids are gonna work when they grow up - they just want kids. No questions asked.
